The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA), Hon. John Kwao Sackey has re-echoed the call on Assembly Members to serve the interest of their electorates and the nation rather than seeking their own interest first.
The MCE made this call when he addressed the General Assembly meeting which saw the formation of the Sub-Committees of the Assembly.
In his speech, Hon. John Kwao Sackey underscored the significant of the meeting, being the first time the Assembly Members were meeting as a House following their successful election into office and subsequent inauguration.
He noted that there was the need for them to put their personal interest aside and render service for the advancement of the people.
He reminded the Honourable Members of the President’s call on them to “live up to the responsibility reposed in you by the people to serve them to improve their living conditions and make them part of the decision-making process and governance at the local level”.
Hon. Kwao Sackey, explaining the importance of the formation of the Sub-Committees, was optimistic that it “will pave the way for you (Assembly Members) to appreciate your roles in helping to execute the development agenda of the Assembly in particular and the nation as a whole”.
He therefore charged them to “be ready to selflessly commit and dedicate yourselves to the sole aim of facilitating the development of the people and communities who gave you the mandate to serve”.
He further advised them not to see their selection to chair or be a member of a Sub-Committee as an opportunity to show their power or look down on other members, especially the technocrats but rather, “it is an opportunity for you to contribute your skills and knowledge to advancing the development of the municipality”.
He announced Management’s decision to organize an internal orientation workshop for them to augment that of the Regional Secretariat to build their capacities to deliver.
The Assembly for the first time since its creation has a traditional leader as its Presiding Member, and this, the MCE noted as historic saying it is a “testimony of the rich relationship that exists between the Assembly and the traditional authorities in the municipality”.
He then called on the traditional leaders in the municipality to continue to work together as one to deepen that cordiality and urged them to equally respect the authorities of the various stakeholders of the Assembly.
The Presiding Member (PM), Hon. Nii Anang Ofori, Papao Mantse, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity given him to serve.
He pledged commitment and willingness to lead the house to serve dutifully to “the realization of the Assembly’s mission of providing social services and improving the socio-economic conditions of our people”.
The Hon. Nii Anang Ofori hoped that the constitution of the Sub-Committees will enable them bring their expertise to bare on and greatly enhance the work of the Assembly.
The 14-member Assembly was reconstituted into five Sub-Committees namely; Finance and Administration, Justice and Security, Social Services, Development, and Works and elected their chairmen/chairpersons.
