Hon. Jesse Nii Noi Anum, Assembly Member for Haatso Electoral Area, has been elected and sworn into office as the new Presiding Member (PM) for the Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA) at a ceremony at Abokobi.
The need for election of a new Presiding Member became apparent following the revocation by His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, over a month ago, of all appointments made by the previous administration led by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
In the case of GEMA, the immediate-past Presiding Member of the Assembly, Hon. Nii Annang Ofori, Chief of Papao, was a Government Appointee and not an elected member therefore necessitating the election of a new PM to continue his tenure of office until October this year.
At a special General Assembly meeting held at the GEMA Conference Room at Abokobi, 11 out of the 14-member Assembly who were present voted “yes” for the only nominee, Hon. Jesse Nii Noi Anum, to become the new PM.
The brief electoral exercise was supervised by the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Director and Ga East Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission, Mrs. Gladys Pinkrah and Mrs. Janet Koranteng respectively while the Kwabenya Circuit Court Judge, Her Honour Ellen Serwah Mireku, accompanied by the Registrar, Mr. John Kelvin Twumasi, swore the new PM into office.
Addressing the meeting, the Acting Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD), Alhaji Shehu Awudu Kadiri, explained the rational for the election of the Presiding Member noting that it was to ensure continuity of the functioning of the Assembly in accordance with the laid down regulations.
He thanked the Members for the peaceful and cordial conduct of the exercise and urged them to put in greater efforts to ensure the progress of the Assembly.
He announced that arrangements will be made to provide orientation training for the Members, particularly the new ones, to arm them with the requisite knowledge on how the Assembly works and build their capacities to deliver excellent service to the people.
In an interview with GEMANEWS, the newly elected PM, Hon. Jesse Nii Noi Anum, expressed profound gratitude for the confidence his colleagues have reposed in him and elected him to lead the Assembly.
He assured them of his desire and dedication to rendering good service, emulating the exemplary good leadership of his predecessor to raise the image of the Assembly positively higher.
