The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA), Hon. Janet Tulasi Mensah, has announced the establishement of a Council to manage the Dome Market. She made this disclosure at her first public engagement at the Dome Market since taking office as MCE.
The much anticipated meeting attracted scores of traders, residents and commuters as well as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership and faithful in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency and Officials from the Assembly, who appeared elated to be part of such a great, historic and memorable day.
A former trader in the Dome Market, Hon. Janet Tulasi Mensah’s return to the market was heralded with wild jubilation, a befitting welcome for the homecoming of one of their own and a scene reminiscent of the Biblical Triumphal Entry by Jesus Christ.
The market women danced and jumped with joy as they mobbed her path from her car and cheered her on to the meeting grounds.
Addressing the gathering, the MCE, Hon. Janet Tulasi Mensah, who began with a quotation from the Bible, Lamentations 3:37, said her ascension to the great office was predestined by God and it has come to pass at the right time.
She said the Dome Market which had been fraught with fear and intimidation by the leadership was henceforth set free under her administration.
“I am proud to have been a trader here in this market and I know what we’ve been through. How we were treated was not the best. By God’s grace we have been privileged to learn and understand the Bye Laws and from today, I am directing that nobody should pay a dime to anyone here in the market”, she stated referring to a reported One Ghana Cedi (GHC1.00) imposed on the traders by the market leadership.
She further explained that President Nana Addo has cancelled all forms of levies collected from Head Potters and that should be observed as such in the market and expressed disgust at the illegal fees charged them and other traders by the leadership.
“The President works with the laws of the country so I’m also going to use the law and work with. We are going to redevelop this market, expand it and make beautiful for you to operate from. So should all abide by the laws so that together we can move this market forward”, the MCE remarked.
She announced that the Assembly will facilitate the formation of a Council to manage the Dome Market and urged the traders to support her to achieve her vision for the market.
She again advised the market women to be conscious of their eating habits and lifestyles to ensure that they stay healthy in their own interest, families and the municipality.
The Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD), Alhaji Shehu Awudu Kadiri, advised the traders to support the MCE and the Assembly to bring more development into the market.
He reiterated the MCE’s call on the women to be law-abiding and rally behind her to deliver.
“Please I will urge you to support her. If only you support her then whatever you need, she will provide for you. I can assure you that she is for your interest and will not indulge in what will not benefit you”, the MCD stressed.
The traders took turns to ask questions and make comments as they so wished which drew a long queue.
They mostly pleaded with the MCE to help construct more sheds to accommodate the numerous traders who cannot afford to rent the lockable shops.
Some officials of the governing NPP in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency also took turns to address the gathering including the 2nd Vice Chairperson and Government Appointee of the Assembly, Hon. Mary Odonkor and the Organizer, Mr. Seth Kofi Osei Kissi.
Hon. Janet Tulasi Mensah and her entourage passed through the market to abreast herself with the current state of development.
